Opening Party and Day 1 Competition

Master of the oceanMaster Of the Ocean Cabarete Dominican Republic 2016The date is in the famous Lax Ojo Cabarete Bar where all of the athletes, fans and sponsors are reunited to presence from firsthand the official aperture for the elite event in the country for the best watermen and women of the world, Master of the Ocean. With the support of the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, the activity is initiated with choreography from the Folkloric Dominican Ballet, lifting the spirits.



 

Next, the main organizer Mr. Marcus Bohm gives thanks to all collaborators, associated companies and volunteers that have become an important part of this event, unique in its category.

¨Welcome to the 14th edition for Master of the Ocean. We want to express our gratitude to the community of Cabarete and to all sponsors, athletes and everyone involved for keeping this event alive, we couldn’t do it without you!¨

In representation for the Vice minister of Sports, Marcos Diaz, Mr. Neftali Lamur addressed the crowd and thanked the couple and organizers Patricia Hiraldo and Marcus Bohm for this inspiring event. ¨We are very pleased with Master of the Ocean because it transcends. It doesn’t just include sports, it gives you culture, health, environment and history, slowly transforming Cabarete into the new mecca for extreme sports. The Ministry of Sports offers its complete support for this initiative. Honored to be a part of it.¨

Also mentioned in the activity were all of the main competing athletes this year such as Olympian Michael Gebhart, Luciano Gonzalez, Diony Guanadigno, Zane and Shelby Schweitzer, amongst others, and their trajectories in the different sports in which they will be competing, setting up higher standards for the event each year.

Day One Master of the Ocean
Encuentro Beach/Playa El Encuentro
Its 7am in Encuentro Beach and the sun is slowly passing through the clouds between smooth breezes, dreamy conditions for a day of action in the beach. The athletes are slowly arriving to the competition area and hang out giving each other tips and chatting a few minutes before getting ready.

Marcus Bohm, main organizer and father of Master of the Ocean makes a pause in his motions to welcome all of the attendees. With a look of satisfaction in his eye, he turns on the mic and gives his blessing for the aperture of the event with the categories of SUP (Stan up Paddling) and Surf. The judges, Pedro Suarez, Arturo Gómez y Dimitris Kalpakidis are accompanied by the animator and sports commenter JJ Walsh while they take their seats and talk out the aspects to keep in mind during the competition.

All athletes warm up and get in the water, each of them doing the best they can with the best they got. The crowd cheers on at every maneuver and gets more excited with each passing heat, extending the feel-good vibe amongst the competitors.

By the end of the surf rounds we had the opportunity to share a moment with the current Master of the Ocean, Hawaiian Zane Schweitzer. These were his impressions:

`First of all, aloha to everyone! Im very excited to be back in Cabarete, DR, with all my friends. I’m here to defend my title, well on my way to win 3rd consecutive Master of the Ocean title, so get ready! Pretty stoked the weather conditions have cleared up, giving us good waves and hopefully some good wind for the afternoon. Happy to have my sister Shelby competing along with me, thanks for having us around! `

Final Results
SUP (Stand up Paddling)

1st Round + 1st Heat
Athletes: Emmanuel Rondon, Jeremy Green and Francisco Hernández. After a close call between Jeremy and Emmanuel, this last one wins with a score of 13.75.

1st Round + 2nd Heat
Athletes: Shelby Schweitzer, Luciano González and Eniel Narvaez. The Hawaiian Shelby wins the round over Luciano with 11 points.

1st Round + 3rd Heat
Athletes: Zane Schweitzer, Carolina Gutiérrez and Derek Gomes. The actual Master of the Ocean, Zane Schweitzer, gets pumped and wins the heat while putting up higher standards for all competitors by closing it with an astonishing participation and score of 48 points.

1st Round + 4th Heat
Athletes: Diony Guadanigno, Dauryn Reynoso and Brandon Sanford. The Cabarete local Dauryn Reynoso wins the last SUP heat with several maneuvers and a great score of 38.75 points.

SURF
1st Round + 1st Heat Athletes: Emmanuel Rondon, Jeremy Green and Francisco Hernández. For this category the Venezuelan Francisco shows off and beats the rest with a score of 37.5 points.

1st Round + 2nd Heat
Athletes: Shelby Schweitzer, Luciano González and Eniel Narvaez. Luciano is the Dominican that brings home the glory with this heat by winning with 28.75 points.

1st Round + 3rd Heat
Athletes: Zane Schweitzer, Carolina Gutiérrez and Derek Gomes. It was a close competition between to big ones, Venezuelan Derek Gomes comes out victorious with an overall score of 40 points.

1st Round + 4th Heat
Athletes: s: Diony Guadanigno, Dauryn Reynoso and Brandon Sanford. The Cabarete local Brandon wins with 28.25 points.
