Valentine's Day in Cabarete, Dominican RepublicLike in so many other countries the Dominican Republic will also be celebrating Saint Valentine’s Day on 14 February. Here the day is celebrated by giving a little present, chocolates or some flowers to loved ones and even friends as the main idea on the island is that this day is all about love and friendship.

The origins of Saint Valentine
Valentine's Day in Cabarete, Dominican Republic

To find out who Saint Valentine was we need to go back to the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudio II passed a law saying that young people could not get married because he was of the conviction that single men make much better soldiers than married ones. A simple priest called Valentine was not of the same conviction and continued to marry young couples despite the ban. He was found out and sent to prison after not wanting to renounce his faith. In the end he was beheaded on the 14th of February in the year 270.

A few centuries later, Pope Gelasio established Saint Valentine’s Day in honor of the priest who fought for couples in love.
