Carnival parade in Cabarete

Cabarete Carnival ParadeGood news! For those who have missed the Carnival season, or just couldn’t make it out of Cabarete to the Carnival celebrations in La Vega, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo or any of the other big towns, a Carnival parade is being organized on Saturday 14 March. Expect beautiful costumes without the usual hassle of having to look out for the notorious (and sometimes painful) whips or greasy / muddy figures trying to hug you in the hope that you will pay them not to do so!

Taimacaros from Puerto PlataFive different professional Carnival groups from all over the country will show off their most beautiful costumes typical of their region. Come and see stunning costumes of typical Dominican Carnival figures such as the Diablo Cojuelo, the limping devil, who is said to be a demon banished to earth because of his clownish pranks, and limping because he hurt himself in the process. Of course, Roba la Gallina will also be present, aka the Chicken Thief, in the form of a costumed female character with extremely large breasts and behind bearing an open parasol parodying the original chicken thief dressed up as a woman to hide the stolen chickens in the breast and behind area.

Also expect to see the Taimacaros from Puerto Plata, a Carnival group that stands out because their costumes and masks accentuate indigenous roots by taking the form of Taíno (the indigenous god of the people living on the island when Christopher Columbus arrived). They use elements from nature to make up their costumes, including sea shells to symbolize their relationship with the ocean.

Leones de Villa Maria from Santo DomingoAward winning Carnival group Los Leones de Villa Maria from Santo Domingo will come with a group of fifty marchers. Other groups will come from Puerto Plata, San Francisco de Macoris, Constanza and San Juan.

“This parade is all about showcasing the rich Dominican Carnival culture with its gorgeous costumes in a safe and easy environment. We don’t expect anyone to be dress up”, highlights the organizer.

This colorful parade will kick off at 8PM and will march all along the beach between the restaurants and the beach terraces, starting from Eze Bar until Villa Taina. After that the Carnival groups will walk back to the center of the beach to the main music stage.

Don’t miss the upcoming carnival parade this Saturday, made possible with the help of the Ministry of Tourism, the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of Sosua-Cabarete (Ashoresoca) and all bars and restaurants in Cabarete.
