Colorful Weekend in Cabarete

Cabarete Music and ArtsCabarete Music & Arts Festival literally painted town red this past weekend! More than 15 murals and light poles were painted and decorated by local and international artists participating in this first cultural festival organized by independent artists, creative people and entrepreneurs with a passion to create and share their music and arts with the public.

“Our purpose is to consolidate a platform for experimental music, and for emergent contemporary art, with creative programming and activities consisting of: mural painting, live music, performances, light pole paintings, exhibitions, bazars, etc. Cabarete Music & Arts Festival is the creation of an event brand in Cabarete, which highlights values and concepts related to a concrete lifestyle of feeling, living and thinking. It exposes and promotes values, creativity, conscious awakening and development of critical thinking”, says co-organizer Vladimir Ramirez.

The event raised awareness not only amongst the artists, but called local residents and tourists out of their beach chairs to walk the streets of Cabarete watching murals and light poles transform into art and colorful inspirations throughout town.

“It’s amazing! This art is beautiful and is giving Cabarete a new feeling, but the most intriguing experience was to walk around and actually see the artists at work! A fun surprise on our vacation”, said Canadian tourist Monique.

Russian artist Natalya Che has established her interior design and wall-art business in Sosua, only 10 minutes outside of Cabarete. Natalya was invited to participate and integrate her artistic visions in the Cabarete Music & Arts Festival:
“This has been super fun!! I am enjoying seeing so many artists being able to express their arts, and the organizers have done an incredible job putting it all together. Everyone is doing so well and I look forward to seeing this event back next year. Or hopefully before” she says.

Mr. Letta, another one of the invited artists from Santo Domingo, shared his stoke:
“This is just amazing, seeing how Cabarete turned in to an art show! I have been fortunate to be a part of a similar type of event in Santo Domingo, where us graffiti artists gather for New years to make a difference in the streets with our art, and being up here in Cabarete means it is working. Making a difference! The event concept is great!”

The art pieces are according to the artists not randomly chosen, but well planned and prepared to fit the Cabarete lifestyle, enhancing the essence and personality of the town.

“I chose my art piece based on the location and activities on this part of town where I have had my base. I am located outside the supermarket, close to the beach, in a surf town. I chose a happy surfer with lots of fruit!” said Puerto Plata artist Juanky, also known as Juan Villaman.

Cabarete resident and cook Maria Mironova from Russia rejuvenated a light pole while being admired by the public, in the middle of the busy Cabarete streets:
“I am very inspired and think others feel the same about this event and activity. It is cool to see people painting all over town, and it has put a lot of color to our daily lives. It’s fantastic stuff!”

Cabarete Music & Arts announced already Sunday, the last day of the event, that the artists indeed don’t want to go home and will continue painting throughout the entire month of December.

“There are still many walls and light poles left to paint in Cabarete and some of the artists that could not join us during the weekend will join the artists that are already here to continue creating and putting color to Cabarete this month. We are extremely happy and excited to see these results, and we are looking forward to staying on to show more of our art and the effect this has on us and the community”, said Santo Domingo graffitero Freco del Krew.

“The event turned out exactly the way we had hoped and planned for! Good music, good ambiance, families, integration of town with the event and a lot of art! The faces of the kids and all the people visiting Cabarete and the event said it all. We could not be happier with the outcome and we are excited that the event will keep going throughout the month”, said Vladimir Ramirez.

The local organizers encourage Cabarete residents and visitors to walk the streets of Cabarete to share the experiences with the artists and participate in raising awareness and development of critical thinking and conscience.
