Looking for delicious falafels?

Spring is in the air and so is the delightful aroma of the humble chickpea patty, garbanzo bean burger, better known internationally as the falafel. On Monday 9 March, Cabarete’s new star on the culinary map, Flip Flop Falafels (Island Style), launched a soft opening. Free samples have been available this past Friday and Saturday as well.

“Why falafels?”, I asked the owners Dee and Joe while enjoying the coldest beer in town at their first restaurant Gordito’s Fresh Mex. “In our four years here at Gordito’s we realized Cabarete is an excellent test market for a restaurant concept that can go international, with Cabarete being a unique place attracting people worldwide and from all walks of life.”

“Like Gordito’s we want to introduce more healthy eating to Cabarete. Falafels are vegan after all and we will be offering a Greek style salad using Finca Verde organic greens.  We’re keeping it simple offering either a falafel sandwich or platter, and for the meat lovers a gyro sandwich or platter from 5 to 8 USD.”

Selections for the platter and/or side dishes include hummus with pita chips (Kika Bon) or carrot sticks, Taboulet (a cracked wheat salad), a Babaganash-like eggplant salad – more Dominican style, Tzatziki - a creamy cucumber yoghurt sauce, feta cheese, and yes, French fries! Drink offerings include a Mediterranean lemonade with mint and fresh ice tea. Fresh juices, sodas, water and beer are also available. The culinary genius behind the falafel recipe Joe explains: “Each Middle-Eastern country has their own style of falafel, but we wanted to keep it simple using local ingredients and creating an Island Style.”

“And why Flip Flop Falafel, catchy as it sounds with the word falafel?” Joe elaborates that Deidra has been giving away flip flops to the local kids of the Callejon since Gordito’s opened. This act of generosity is lovingly referred to as the Chancleta Club and is now ready to go one step further. “By offering customers a chance to purchase a pair of flip flips with the Flip Flop Falafel logo a second pair will go to a child from the Callejon”.

The clean retro-surf look of the logo and eatery were designed by Rob Rembiszewski and wife Mary of Design + Build Interiors Group, residents of Cabarete since three years.

Be prepared for another healthy tasty inexpensive dining experience conveniently located in Dream Plaza next to Gordito’s. “Don’t expect a quicker-than-quick fast food place like Gordito’s”, added Dee. “Flip Flop Falafel will be more tranquilo, with delicious food served in a more leisurely fashion.”
