Welcome to the biggest event in kiteboarding in the DR!: MaiTai Cabarete Freestyle Invitational

A new concept, more competition and extreme kiteboarding is the plan for the next few days in Cabarete’s sports agenda. Organized by MaiTai Global and the World Kiteboarding League (WKL), the invitational has a high standard for it’s top athletes. In this case the event is supported and fueled by crowdfunding where investors and kiteboarders alike have supported the competition.

The MaiTai Cabarete Freestyle Invitational has crossed waters in becoming the first stop on the WKL Clean Ocean Project Tour for freestyle, big air and waves. MaiTai Global and the WKL extend their appreciation to the event’s top sponsors: Other World Computing (OWC), Skycatch, SOLOSHOT, Breathometer, Millennium, and the Clean Ocean Project.

MaiTai Global functions as a big mélange of influencers and entrepreneurs as innovation experts that also conjure up philantropic activities around the world. Susi Mai, as co-founder of MaiTai Global, considers the new alliance a great iniciative due to all the athletes behind WKL and the Kite Rider’s Union (KRU), while also exhibiting passion in their new joint adventure:

It was a big undertaking but I am extremely proud. For me this is a way of helping the riders disrupt the sport of kiteboarding to try and push forward innovation. There has been some mismanagement in the tour last year so the riders formed the KRU and together we can make sure the sport continues to grow and support the professional athletes who live off the industry.

The MaiTai community has great professional success and an incredible network with shared interests, they have managed to come together in an extreme environment.

With 24 male and 12 female athletes, the synergy between MaiTai Global and KRU is palpable, giving them a voice in the running tour, well-deserved recognition on a global platform and assisting in the creation of a fair and successful World Tour.

With a background in sports herself, Susi Mai began her kiteboarding carreer in Cabarete 13 years ago by winning second place on the World Tour and now she’s happy to be back with the MaiTai Global team, working their best to push the sport to new heights.

I did my first ever world cup competition in the very same waters of Cabarete in 2003. Much to mine and everyone else’s surprise, I placed second, almost beating the reigning world champion. It was the debut of my professional kiteboarding career and now I am hoping to give little something back to this incredible sport that took me on the ride of my life. My heart fills with gratitude towards the MaiTai community for pulling together their resources and believing in me. Time to Rock and Roll!” - Susi Mai
