North Coast gems - Playa Diamante

Playa Diamante - photo credit - gocabrera.comCabrera, known for its cliff-riddled coastline, harbors a well-hidden gem. Tucked in between two headlands, Playa Diamante has beautiful crystal clear turquoise water that stays shallow without any waves or currents for a at least hundred meters from the shore.

Perfectly protected from the Atlantic, this beach is very popular with families as it provides one of the safest bathing environments in the area, especially for small children.

Playa Diamante is also one of the few beaches on the North Coast with perfectly white firm sand, which turns into a type of clay on the far end of the beach. Water from an underground river feeds into the bay and translates into refreshingly cool streams in the warm water of the bay.

As the bay provides perfect shelter from the ocean, a flat bottomed traditional wooden fishing boat sometimes anchors in the bay in the deeper water, making it easy to imagine pirates tucking their ship in the little bay to escape detection.  When the boat is anchored in the bay, those who like to jump from things in the water can use the boat as a diving platform.  At the far end of the beach, locals sometimes pull up the same type of boat for repairs.

The only facilities on the beach are a small shack that serves typical beach food. This beach, like all beaches in the Dominican Republic can get very busy in the weekend. If you prefer to enjoy your piece of paradise with just your friends and family, come during the week and bring your own picnic as the beach shack is likely to be closed.

How to get there
From Sosua / Cabarete drive to Cabrera. Just past the town on the left hand side you’ll see a small sign for Playa Diamante.

Check out googlemaps for more specific directions.
