Chiropractic care is a philosophical approach to health that is based on the idea that the body has the capacity to heal itself as long as there is nothing interfering with the process.

One of the things that can interfere with the body’s ability to function and heal properly is an abnormal strain on the nervous system that can arise from misalignments of the vertebrae (the bones of the spine).

Chiropractic in Cabarete John LancasterA common misconception of the general public is that chiropractors are just neck and back pain doctors. We are actually nervous system specialists; it just so happens that working with the spine offers the most direct access to influencing the nervous system.

The chiropractic term for any spine misalignment that causes an interference with the nervous system is a vertebral subluxation. It is important to realize that while not all subluxations result in pain, every subluxation negatively impacts the body’s ability to function and heal properly.

Q: When and where did chiropractic originate?
J: Chiropractic was discovered by chance by D.D. Palmer in Davenport, Iowa in 1895. At the time, Palmer was working as a magnetic healer in the Ryan Building on Brady Street.

One day, Harvey Lillard, the building’s janitor, told him about how he lost most of his hearing 17 years earlier when he bent down to lift a heavy box and he felt something “pop” in his back. Palmer hypothesized that if a bone moving out of place caused the man to lose his hearing than putting it back in place should restore his hearing. Palmer proceeded to adjust the man’s spine over the next three days and sure enough Lillard regained his hearing!

Over the next few months, Palmer thought he had discovered the cure for deafness but obviously that was not the case. However, this event spurred Palmer to explore the notion that small misalignments in the spine can have a tremendous impact on the function of the human body.

Q: What types of problems can chiropractic help with?
J: This is a common question that people often ask me. But before I address what types of problems chiropractic can help with, we must be clear on the fact that chiropractic is neither a treatment nor a cure for any symptom or disease.

That said, chiropractic care can help the body deal with any number of secondary conditions that may arise due to an interference in the nervous system. Some of the common secondary conditions that chiropractic can help with include:

- Neck & Back Pain
- Sciatica & Hip Pain
- Numbness & Tingling
- Muscular Spasm & Tension
- Headaches (Including Migraines)
- Pinched Nerve
- Herniated Disc
- Canal Stenosis
- Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Pain
- Poor Posture
- Bed wetting
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Degenerative Joint Disease
- Decreased Range of Motion
- Muscular Imbalance
- Dizziness/Vertigo
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- infertility
- Uterine constraint (leading to breached fetal positioning)
- “latching” problems, that prevent babies from breastfeeding

Q: What are the benefits of chiropractic treatment?
J: The benefits of regular chiropractic care are huge! In addition to feeling better (in terms of pain reduction) many patients also experience better sleep, more energy, increased mental clarity, more focus and productivity at work, and improved performance in sports and other physical activities.

Patients have also reported that they have reduced physical and mental stress, better moods and an overall improvement in the perception of their quality of life and well-being.

Chiropractic in Cabarete John LancasterQ: Is chiropractic treatment safe? What are the possible side effects from chiropractic treatment?
J: Specific chiropractic adjustments done by a specialist are safe. There are people who still try to discredit chiropractic by circulating false information claiming a link between cervical adjustments and strokes. However, this claim is absurd. Numerous published scientific and medical studies have shown that there is no statistical correlation between the two.

Q: Does chiropractic treatment hurt?
J: For the most part, chiropractic adjustments are relatively painless. In fact, many patients tell me how much they actually enjoy it! For those that are a little timid at first, I let them know that I am proficient in several techniques, including some that are very light and barely require any force. That said, everyone is different and everyone responds differently to care.

Q: The noise you hear, is that the bones grinding against each other?
J: No, the sound that is often heard during a chiropractic adjustment is not your bones grinding against each other, nor is it bones “cracking” or “breaking”.

The sound, called a cavitation, is created by gas (in this case nitrogen) rushing in to fill the partial vacuum created when the joint space is slightly increased (within its physiological limits).

Another, more familiar example of this phenomenon would be the “pop” sound you hear when the cork is taken out of a champagne bottle. Not all chiropractic adjusting techniques produce this noise. In fact, some adjusting techniques use little force and therefore produce no noise at all.
