Dr John Lancaster Chiropractic in Cabarete Dominican Republic children and pregnancyAre you searching for alternative ways to treat your child from physical injuries or preventive treatment for such? Chiropractic treatments have been proved efficient and preventive, but might still be unfamiliar to some. Chiropractor John Barret Lancaster is dedicated to helping children to a better everyday life, even during their time in mom's belly. Welcome to Dr. Lancaster’s bi-weekly blog, where you will find some of the answers to these questions.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment safe for children?
J: Yes, chiropractic is safe for children of all ages. I have worked with many families that will bring their newborn in to get it checked for vertebral subluxations on the way home from the hospital after the child was born. The birth process is often the cause of the first misalignments of the spine as the process (both vaginal delivery and especially c-section) can be very stressful on the delicate cervical spine of a newborn.

Q: Overall, how can children benefit from chiropractic care?
J: The whole purpose of chiropractic care is to ensure that a person’s nervous system is functioning properly and not being obstructed by structural shifts in the spine that cause abnormal stress and strain on the nervous system. And though this is crucial for people of all ages, it is of the utmost importance in childhood and puberty when the body is going through so much development, growth and change.

Q: Can chiropractic adjustment help ease growing pains?
J: Yes. In addition to restoring the proper functioning nervous system, adjustments also restore the proper biomechanics of joints. This allows muscles to relax and reduces localized nerve constriction, both of which can reduce pain

Q: Is chiropractic treatment recommendable for colic (uncontrollable crying in an otherwise healthy baby)?
J: As mentioned earlier, chiropractic care is not a treatment or cure for any disease or symptom. However, chiropractic care can help the body recover from colic by restoring proper nerve function to the digestive system and the rest of the body.

Q: How do children usually react towards chiropractic treatment? Are they afraid of it or do they like it?
J: Most kids really enjoy it, which is very apparent when you hear them giggle and you see a smile break out across their face . And it is fun to watch when families come in to the office and the kids run to the table to be the first one to get checked. Sometimes though, kids may be a little apprehensive at first, which is not a surprise considering many children associate going to the doctor’s office with getting shots or only going when they are not feeling well.

Q: Do you use different adjustment techniques for children?
J: Yes, I use different adjustment techniques for children. Children adjust very easily and the adjustment requires very little force. Often, especially with really young kids, the adjustment is done with sustained contact and no adjustive thrust is needed at all.
